Weekly Wrap-up Week of 1/5/14

We had a fun and excited week, here are the highlights:

Serve Yourself Snack Tray

C seems to always be hungry.  Her normal meal schedule is the standard 3 meals and 2 snacks a day.  However, she constantly asks for a snack.  When I offer her something healthy like veggies with dip she gets mad so I am never sure if she is truly hungry or just loves snack foods.

This week we tried something new: serve yourself snack tray.  I have seen this idea online before but I couldn't find the blog again.  I loaded up the tray with 2 normal snacks and 2 veggie snacks.  C is allowed to grab from the snack tray whenever she wants.  The first day she ate everything on the tray (kiwi, muffin, cauliflower and ants on a log)  She must have been hungry!  The second day she only ate the muffin and the apple.

We didn't do a snack tray Tuesday and Thursday because we weren't home.

The desk became a catch-all

This is what C's desk looked like at the beginning of the week.  Yikes!  We had to re-organize our school stuff and re-instate the "nothing goes on the school desk unless you are currently using it" rule.  Hopefully we can keep it cleared off or at least not completely covered!

Birds of Prey Study

We finally got around to starting our Birds of Prey study this week!  C loves it and is doing a great of job of working on it mostly by herself.  I am trying to think of what to study next but I was disappointed at the library - I can't find any other books that are in a similar format and reading level that study other animals.  I with the made the Field Guide for Young Naturalists for more than birds!

All About Spelling

We were recently blessed to win an IEW gift certificate through a HEDUA facebook party.  I thought the IEW writing materials look wonderful but I couldn't afford to cover the difference.  I was so excited to find All About Spelling in their store!  We are enjoying it so far.

Snow Fun

We made this awesome snowman this week.  Unfortunately, he was ruined the next day by rain which froze over.  She is a little upset that her scarf is frozen to the ground, oops!

How was your week?  I would love to hear about it in the comments section below!  Thanks so much for visiting Joy Focused Learning!

  1. My girls are always hungry, too! I've done muffin tin snacks before - a little snack in each of the 12 cups that they could graze from. It keeps me from having to answer the "what can I have to eat?" question a zillion times a day!

My big girls and I are just getting into our study of Vikings and other Nordic peoples in history, learning the names & locations of the countries in the Middle East, time, and the basics of writing (outlining thoughts, etc), and the systems of the body...our days are full :) My little one and I have reading time each day for school - classic children's lit.

Keep up the great work - your daughter looks like she's having a lot of fun!
