Ste-e-e-e-eamboat a-Comin'! by Jill Esbaum + Fun with Boats

This month's Poppins Book Nook theme was so fun!  What kid doesn't love planes, trains and automobiles?  We had a hard time deciding on the book to focus on for this month's theme.  There are so many fun books about vehicles.  When we came across Ste-e-e-e-eamboat a-Comin'! by Jill Esbaum, it made the decision so easy!  This book is so enjoyable to read with a great rhythm, fun rhymes and excellent vocabulary.

We read it a few times and got busy making boats!  We made:

A boat from a foil pie pan.(idea from spoonful.com)

Two Paper boats.  However, I forgot to take a picture so this picture is courtesy of: Biswarup Ganguly/Wikimedia Commons.  We followed these directions.

We tried making a propelled boat.  We were inspired by this much cuter boat from Red Ted Art. (sorry for the grainy photo!)

Little C was thrilled to get our boats in the water and see which boat worked best.  She correctly predicted that the paper boats would be the weakest.  Our propelled boat didn't work as well as we'd hoped but I think if we had found a straight-sided container it would have been better.

After a few minutes she decided she preferred the foil boat without a sail and put it to work carrying cargo.  She also added some fish and sea creatures to the water.

She is planning on getting everything out in the morning and exploring more with our simple little boats!  It was a great, simple activity to go along with our book.

We had so much fun this month exploring the Where in the World? theme!  Be sure to visit the other participating bloggers for even more great book and activity ideas.
