Weekly Wrap-up week of 9/29

We had a busy week!  I'll start with my favorite activities:

Ice Cream Science

We have been meaning to try this recipe for homemade hard shell ice cream topping for quite awhile.  We try to eat organic as much as possible and really focus on not eating many conventional treats to avoid genetically modified corn and sugar.  So my poor girl has never enjoyed the fun of pouring on the hard shell chocolate and seeing it magically harden over her ice cream - until this week!

All it takes is some chocolate(preferably organic) and coconut oil.  Check out the recipe for the ratios.  Since we were able to observe how coconut oil changes consistency based on temperature, I decided it qualified as a science experiment.  Science + Ice cream?  Does it get any better?! It worked perfectly!  C dubbed our concoction "Magic Fairy Ice Cream"

Another favorite this week was our outdoor math time.  We actually did this on Friday but I posted our wrap-up in the morning so I am including last Friday on today's post.  The weather was so beautiful last Friday so we packed up our stuff and had school outside.  We had a blast!

Outside School

I've mentioned before that C isn't too fond of math time, but she loved practicing math skills on the huge sidewalk chalk number line.  We practiced counting down from 20 as well as addition and subtraction.

Here's a quick video of our jumping math fun!

Camping Journal Prompt

We had a quick camping trip this weekend so our journal prompt for Monday was: "What was your favorite part of camping?"  Here is her entry: I LikeD Roasting mArshmilos!  She is getting pretty good at sounding out words when she isn't rushing.

Fruit of the Spirit Study: Love

We have been using our Fruit of the Spirit: Love set for the last two weeks and on Thursday she insisted on making me breakfast because she loves me.  She wants to make a salt dough gift for our neighbors this weekend.

Outside Fun

We try to start each day with outside time, if it isn't raining. We don't always make it out -sometimes C sleeps in a little late.  This week she decided to use the scooter she got for her third birthday.  She has hardly used it so it was nice to see it get some use! (Even if she is a little big!)

Calvert

As I mentioned in my last post, we are using Calvert grade K this year.  This curriculum is a bit too easy for C most of the time but we are supplementing with our own printables and activities as well as shortening up the lessons so we don't spend all day reviewing something she has mastered.

Right now in Calvert math she is working on patterns.  Calvert wants her to be introduced to a new pattern (AB, AAB, ABB, etc) each day but instead I asked her to make each type of pattern on the first day (pictured at the top of this post) to confirm that she has mastered patterns and I only make her do one of the pages assigned each day instead of all of them.

We also worked a bit with shapes.  She matched real life objects to 3d shapes and we made shapes with toothpicks and playdoh.  I was impressed that she was able to make a trapezoid without help.

For science this week we talked about the five senses and how things move.  We did an experiment where she tasted foods while holding her nose closed to see if it changed the way the food tastes.  I have always heard that you can't taste as well if you can't smell the food but she only got one thing wrong.  She thought cornbread was a graham cracker.  She really enjoyed the experiment though!  We also did an experiment to find ways to move things in water without touching them.  Her favorite way was to move the water around the object.

There was were so many fun things we did this week - it was hard to not go overboard with this post - I think I failed, but I tried!  Thanks for stopping by!

  2. Magic Shell is THAT easy to make? Huh. I love the stuff! LOL But rarely buy it, sometimes a cone from Dairy Queen. Your math numberline is very creative!
