Weekly Wrap-up week of 11-17-13

I think I am finally starting to accept that my week is never going to go how I plan.  I feel like I say, "This was an off week." every week!  This week is no exception.  Oh well, it is what it is.

Writing a Grocery List

C was bored while I was making my shopping list, so I suggested she make one too and she did!  She organized hers by meal: dinner | breakfast | lunch |snack.  This is much more organized than my list. :)

Dinner: sour cream, penne, chicken | Breakfast: waffles | Lunch: jelly | Snack: yogurt

Phonics and Vocabulary

For Calvert, we are skipping their phonics and using Phonic's Pathways, unless we have an assignment that needs to be sent in.  I like Calvert phonics for kids learning to read but C needed something a little meatier.  I found Phonics Pathways at the library and we have been seeing great results with C's spelling.  We will be purchasing it soon!

We are keeping some of the Calvert vocabulary, some days they work on sight words that C has known for a long time so we skip it.  Other days, Calvert has us work on nouns and verbs which we are enjoying.  In the picture below, she was acting out verbs (jump in this picture) to reinforce the idea that they are action words.

Craft

C was excited to see a "make your own guitar" craft in our Calvert lessons this week!  Here she is adding strings (rubber bands) to her guitar (trash bag box)!

Math with Life of Fred

We were so excited to see Life of Fred: Apples at the library!  I have been wanting to try it with C for awhile.  She is definitely more of a reading person than a math person so I thought maybe bringing the two together would help her enjoy math time a little more.  I am hesitant to buy something without trying it though because I have wasted a lot of money that way in the past. So far, she loves it!  If she continues to love it, we will be purchasing it soon! :)

Can you see the excitement in the first photo?  She knew it was a math book.  I said, "Caitlyn what am I going to do with this picture, you look so bored."  She replied, "Because I am bored!"

The rest of the pictures were taken just a couple sentences in, when she read that Fred goes to and lives at Kittens University.  She laughed and laughed.  Then she laughed all over again when she tried to get back to the story!

It may have been another off week but we did have some fun learning time!  Thanks so much for visiting Joy Focused Learning.  What were some of your favorite moments this week?

  1. We love Life of Fred here. We've worked our way through the entire elementary series and just started the intermediate series [Kidneys].
