I received a free six week trial to K5 Learning for review purposes. I was not compensated in any other way. K5 Learning has an online reading and math program for kindergarten to grade 5 students. I've been given a 6 week free trial to test and write a review of their program. If you are a blogger, you may want to check out their open invitation to write an online learning review of their program.

K5 Learning Assessment Process
My absolute favorite feature of K5 is the customization of the program for the child's skill level. K5 offers a thorough and engaging assessment so that your child is able to work on skills they need to practice. I was very impressed with the assessment process.
C happily completed each assessment, before beginning they engage the child with animation that shows a character on a mission. They then tell the student that the more questions they answer the farther they will go in their mission. C appreciated that they take breaks every so often for you play a quick game involving the mission.
Shortly after your child completes the assessment, you will receive an e-mail with the results. I was so impressed with this because the e-mail was very thorough in explaining why the placed C where they did. Since she is already ready quite well, she was off the charts for K reading. In the e-mail they let me know that it is their policy to not bump a child up more than one grade level based solely on assessment results. They let me know that this bump may not be enough for her and to let them know if she needed a change. For math she ended up split between K & 1st depending on the material.
K5 Learning Lessons
C did get a little frustrated with the lessons. She is one who likes to hear the directions and get right to work. She felt like they repeated the directions too much. I think it would be nice if they only gave directions once and offered a button to repeat as necessary. They do actually have a question button for the basic instructions but still automatically remind the kids what they are looking for.
For example: "Click on the beginning sound for each picture"
Then for each question it will say, "Click on the beginning sound for ___________"
You cannot click the answer until they finish saying the directions which is what frustrated C. However, I don't think it is really a major issue. We both loved that the lessons are all presented as a game which kept C engaged for longer than I expected. I especially pleased with the fact the C enjoyed completing the math lessons. I have mentioned before that she isn't always happy about doing math!
