Homeschooling in a Small Home

I would love to have a big, bright homeschool room and I hope to have one eventually.  For now though, we live in a small two bedroom apartment.  That doesn't leave much space for our school stuff.

I know a lot of people have school at their dining room table.  That wasn't a very convenient solution for us though.  We don't have a pantry in our apartment so we put a bookcase up in the dining area to use as a makeshift pantry.  There isn't any space in our dining area to store books or supplies, we would be constantly leaving the table to grab supplies for the next subject.  Also, I thought C would enjoy having a space of her own to learn.

We got a cute adjustable height table from Ikea, a clock and a small bookshelf that we set up in the corner of our living room.  It worked out okay but our living room is very small and I felt like we could really use that extra space.

Last night, I got the brilliant idea to see if her desk would fit in the small landing at the top of the stairs.  It fit perfectly!  I quickly got to work cleaning out the two closets up their to make some space for our school supplies.  I am so happy with how it turned out!  I will post an update soon to let you know how it is working out for us.  Here is how I set it up:

The desk just barely fit!  I put up a bar with organizing cups (dry erase markers, crayons, pencils, glue/scissors)  I also hooked her mini anchor charts on the bar so they are close by when she needs them.  Above the bar is a melted crayon painting C made with her aunt.

Above her desk is her number line and clock.  I will also hang up work here throughout the week.  It is very motivating to C to have her best work displayed with a sticker on it. :)

This little space is now our calendar time wall.  This is just in front of C's room.  Before moving our school space up stairs, the dry erase board was laid out horizontally, but it didn't fit here.  My husband had the brilliant idea of turning it on its side! (You can find the calendar printables here, the Spanish weather printables are here.)

I couldn't get a picture of this dry erase that wasn't yellow - sorry!  We got this huge board at Lowes - it is technically a shower board but it works well as a dry erase board.  I love having a large space like this, we use it daily.  Thankfully, it fit well just before the stairs begin.

Between the two closets up here I was able to have plenty of space for our school supplies!

What is your homeschool space like?

Thanks so much for visiting Joy Focused Learning!

  1. Thank you so much for the information on the dry erase board! I will get my husband to get us one and cut it down to fit our walls. I am excited about that..so much less expensive. I found you through the birds of prey unit. That is fascinating. I think my ten year old will enjoy that. I do wish I had more confidence so I could homeschool her.

    1. it is a little scary to be responsible for your child's education - but there are a lot of free resources out there! :) I hope you daughter enjoys the Birds of Prey study! I have noticed that the board doesn't always erase perfectly - I usually go over it once a week or so with a magic eraser.

    2. We have white board, and it doesn't always erase perfectly either :) It seems to depend on the marker we use on it.

I found your post on Hip Homeschool Moms. Thank you for sharing! I came here because of your title, Homeschooling in a Small Home. I feel like our house is too small, especially when I'm trying to homeschool our 3 children, and I'm always trying to figure out how to make everything fit. But, we have a house, not an apartment like you! Thank you for helping me see that we're not so bad off :) And you have some good ideas too!

    3. :) I think homeschooling more than one kid would be nearly impossible in an apartment! Thanks so much for visiting Joy Focused Learning! :)

  2. Love how creative you have been in creating a learning space for your daughter. You are obviously a great momma and a great example of what it mean to make the most of what you have instead focusing on what you don't.
