At the beginning of the year we did our calendar work in English and our weather work in Spanish. I chose to do it that way because C already had a good understanding of weather patterns and terminology but still needed work with dates. Now that she has gotten that down, we are starting to make Spanish a focus during our entire Calendar Time.

Free Sermon Notes Printable
C refuses to go to class at church. I have gone with her to try the class out so she can she it is fun. She still does not want to go, she prefers to sit in the service with us. She does a good job of being quiet and keeps busy with activities we pack for her. Still,I felt like she would benefit from a sermon note guide to help her listen to and be engaged with the sermon instead of just playing.

Valentine's Day is fast approaching! C and I have been checking out the valentines in stores and online to decide what we wanted to hand out this year. When we saw these cute lovebug valentines, we thought we found the winner. Then we saw these cute bubble valentines and decided to combine the two ideas!

Free Morning Work Printables for K - 1st Grade
Some days, C is actually ready to start school before I am! I would like to say it is because I am busy doing important things like laundry or dishes but really, I just like to sit and enjoy my coffee before we start school for the day. I am going to starting setting out independent work for her so that she can get started whenever she feels ready.
Free Printable Independent Work K-1st Grade
Here is a sample of what is included:
Fill in the missing sound (there are pages for beginning, middle and ending sounds). Some focus on a single letter sounds while others focus on blends. These pages also included handwriting practice using Dolch sight words. I chose words from the Dolch list that included letters C could use practice writing.
Circle the picture that matches the sentence. Write a sentence and draw a picture to match.
Read, the answer the question. Draw a picture that goes with the story.
There are 10 pages focusing on K-1st Language Arts Skills. If C enjoys this morning independent work, I will be making more printables focusing on different skills. What independent work sets would you like to see? Please leave a comment and let me know!

Let Your Kids Take an Action Break - FREE Printable
I am very thankful that C usually has a pretty good attitude about getting her work done during school time. Some days though, her little body just can't take sitting for that long. To help her out, I am going to re-instate something we used to do, I'm not sure why we ever stopped.
Here's how we plan to use them:

Bird of Prey Study Guide
As I type, I am hearing the "Hallelujah Chorus" play in my head. I started working on this study guide around the time Joy Focused Learning went live over a month ago! That may or may not seem like a long time to you but it sure does to me! Since starting this project, I can't see a large bird flying overhead without trying to figure out which bird it is. I usually decide it is a Turkey Vulture - I could be totally wrong but at least I feel like I know what I am talking about. :) Wednesday, October 9, 2013
KJV Fruit of the Spirit: LOVE
I made a version of the Fruit of the Spirit: LOVE printables with verses from the KJV. The original printables use the NIrV because that is what C has, but I know a lot of people prefer to use KJV from the get go with their kids!

Fruit of the Spirit: Love
I am so excited to get started with this first pack of Fruit of the Spirit printables with C! I plan on focusing on each fruit for about 2 weeks so we can really dig in and apply it to our lives. I have a couple more ideas for this Love Pack that I haven't made yet but I was too excited to wait! All of the verses are in the NIrV because that is what C has! If I get a lot of requests for KJV I may add KJV pages. I hope you enjoy it!

Calendar Time with FREE Printables
I hope you all had a great weekend! Ours was busy, but not with anything particularly exciting. EXCEPT that I finished up our Calendar Time wall and also made a second set of not so girly printables to share with all of you!
I have seen some excellent Calendar Time ideas on other blogs, ours is pretty simple for a couple reasons:
- I try to not use too much ink/paper-it is SO expensive!
- C isn't too big on math so I try and do our math in short and sweet segments throughout our school time

What Happened to Bilingual Homeschool?
I am consistently surprised at the number of page views this blog gets considering I haven't posted in quite awhile. I apologize for my lack of consistency. The reason I haven't posted is because we haven't been doing much with Spanish lately. C hasn't been very interested. I haven't made any printables because I'm afraid they won't be used. I still want to get some Spanish learning into our day but I need to come up with a new way to do it.

Healthy Food Theme- Fruit Printables.
Starting tomorrow we will have a healthy food theme during our school time! I think we will have a lot of fun with this theme because it will give us an opportunity to do a LOT of C's favorite activity: Eating! She LOVES to eat and is always asking for a snack. I plan to incorporate some simple cooking activities into our school time with this theme. I will post our activities later this week!
I wanted to go ahead and get the fruit printables up for you now that I have finished them! I hope you find the printables useful for your family. If you have any theme requests or would like to see printables in a different way, please let me know!
Now, on to the goodies!
Fruit Flash Cards- Print 2 copies if your child likes memory games! I suggest printing all flash cards on card stock and laminating them to prolong their use! Click the image to download.
I like to eat fruit easy reader- Spanish Print, cut out each page and staple or punch a hole and tie the pages together with yarn. Click the image to download.
Thank you for stopping by Joy Focused Learning!

Tot School: Farm (Granja) Theme
For now, we do Tot School mostly on the weekends. Since moving to Ohio, my husband is still looking for a job utilizing his degree, so for now, I am working full time during the week. I work at the preschool Caitlyn is attending. It is a wonderful school and I do enjoy working there. However, since we were doing daily school in Texas, she is not really challenged by the material at school. That is why I continue to do Tot School on the weekends. I want her to continue to be challenged and learn. Some days, she will ask to do school work when we get home, on those days we will do school work. Most of the time though, we save school work for the weekends! I want to make sure she is both challenged and has time to rest her mind, just play and relax!
This weekend we are working on our Farm theme!
I encourage Caitlyn to use Spanish as often as possible, during school time and just throughout our day. My husband and I try to use Spanish often as well so that she can hear us speaking Spanish.
I encourage Caitlyn to use Spanish as often as possible, during school time and just throughout our day. My husband and I try to use Spanish often as well so that she can hear us speaking Spanish.
We starting out using the Colores Granja printable I posted earlier in the week. She really enjoyed getting to color the pages of the book herself!
We had a visitor during school time today!
Caitlyn said that turtle needed to have school today too! He will show up in several pictures today!
After coloring our Colores Granja printables, we worked with our farm animal flash cards.
We pulled out our farm animal counters and matched the animals to the cards.
She was very bothered by the fact there isn't a rooster in our farm animal set. She said, "There isn't a gallo, what do we do now?" I told her we were trying to see which ones matched and they didn't all need a match. She still wasn't very happy about it though.
Next, we sorted our farm animal counters by color and then made patterns. We made color patterns and animal patterns. I encouraged Spanish throughout the activity and she did excellent. She really has patterns down but she enjoys making them. We continue to practice regularly.
When she was finished with the counters, I pulled out her reading lesson book. Some days, she is really excited to get to the next story and we will do a few pages. Other days, she only wants to do one. Today we did one page.
I love and highly recommend our reading lesson! It is The Reading Lesson by Michael Levin. We bought our copy on Amazon. If you are thinking about using this program with your child, I suggest checking your local library first. We were lucky enough to check the book out from the library before buying it. They start off with the most commonly used letters in the English language and add a few letters or letter blends with each lesson. This system is working out excellently for Caitlyn. We also use the You Can Read sight word program from 1plus1plus1.
After her reading lesson, we reviewed her sight words so far.
Then, she created a monster with her Trio Blocks.
We ended our Tot School day with lunch!

Farm Animals/ Animales de Granja
I am excited to share the first of my farm animal printables with you! I hope to eventually have enough printables for different themes that I can put them together into a pack for you! In the meantime, I will post the printables as I create them.
We will be having a farm animal theme soon so I made a few bilingual printables to go along with our work. There are flash cards and a coloring book/easy reader. Continue reading for links to download!
I made some farm animal flash cards to go along with our theme. Just like with the transportation theme, I usually make the cards into a game. Sometimes we will print two and make a match game. Other times C enjoys hiding them around our homeschool area and finding them as I call out, "Donde esta....?" (Where is...?) It just depends on our mood that day, sometimes we will do both! I have both printables for download at the bottom of the screen. I recommend laminating all flash card printables for repeated use!
I also made an easy reader for the farm animal theme. Instead of having the images already colored in, I made it so that the kids can get hands on and color the images themselves. I suggest reading the sentence for your child and let them choose the correct crayon. I shaded the color words in the appropriate color to help your child relate the Spanish color word heard with the color on the page. Encourage the use of Spanish by your tot by speaking it your self. If they say "red", say "rojo" if they say "rooster" say, "gallo." Be careful not to say the Spanish word as if their English is wrong but just as if they are the one in the same. Transportation Theme Continued!
Welcome to my first linky post! I am excited to share more ideas for our transportation theme from this week. In case you missed my last post, I have created some printables for incorporating Spanish into our transportation theme.
The printables from my last post can be downloaded by clicking on the image.
Unfortunately, I do not have photos of us using the printables yet! I have to get into a habit of photographing our school time. She was very excited when she saw we were doing a transportation theme and couldn't wait to get started!
Caitlyn loves searching for flash cards as I call out "Donde esta..." and name an item. She is really into patterning right now so I made some transportation pattern cards. I encourage Spanish as often as possible as we do our activities. We start out with a few simple patterns - Rojo, Verde, Rojo, Verde - and progress to harder patterns. It is hard to come up with a pattern that is a challenge for her anymore but she loves making patterns so we continue to practice! I suggest laminating the pattern cards cutting out blank tables and taping them together to create base for your tot to lay out their patterns. If you would like the pattern card printables, they can be downloaded by clicking on the image.
I hope you find these printables useful for your family!
Thank you so much for visiting Joy Focused Learning.

Spanish Transportation Printables
I am very excited to share my first printables with you! I plan to do a transportation theme in our Bilingual Homeschool for the week of 9/30/12. I hope you find these printables useful for your family!
When I do flash cards I usually go over them once or twice with C and then I lay them out on the floor and ask, "Donde esta...." ("Where is....) and name an item. Usually she has a blast running or jumping to the item called out. You can also print two sets of the cards and use it as a match game. Click on the image for a link to download. Click on an image below for a link to download the Bilingual Transportation Pack. There are flash cards, an easy reader and pattern cards.
